Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
