Approximately fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then discovered multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials say initial examinations show the liquid was most likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

Local authorities said they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.

An important representative said the incident rendered him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.

"This act affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
