A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
